THE MATCHUP NIGHTMARE

PLAYING THE 4 UNLOCKED THE FULL BAG.

Once Melo embraced power forward, the matchup math got ugly for defenses. Bigger forwards could not comfortably stay in front of him. Smaller wings could not absorb his strength in the post.

His isolation game had always been elite. By 2013, the inside-out package felt complete: jab steps, midrange pull-ups, three-point shooting, post work, bully ball and the ability to get to a clean shot even when the possession broke down.

The position change did not make Melo a scorer. It made an already elite scorer even harder to match.

At the 4, every type of defender had a problem.
02
THE MVP CASE

A GREAT SEASON LANDED IN A RIDICULOUS MVP YEAR.

Melo had a real MVP case. He led the league at 28.7 points per game and powered New York to 54 wins.

But LeBron James and Miami won 27 straight games, while Kevin Durant played 81 games for a 60-win Oklahoma City team. Melo played 67 games. Those details matter when the competition is that strong.

The official voting reflected that reality: LeBron won, Durant finished second and Melo finished third. That is exactly the tier 4DK remembers him occupying — a legitimate top-three or top-four MVP-level player that season without needing to pretend the trophy was stolen from him.

MVP-caliber does not always mean MVP. 2013 had brutal competition.
The Knicks era began as a star pairing before Melo eventually became the clear centerpiece.

THE SCORING

BULLY BALL + ISO WAS THE SIGNATURE.

If there is one image of 2013 Melo, it is a defender getting walked into the post and realizing the possession is already leaning the wrong way.

He could back you down, face you up, jab into space or rise over the contest. The shot-making was difficult, but the footwork made it repeatable.

That ability to manufacture a quality attempt late in the clock is why his scoring title felt so representative of his game.

Melo was a bucket from every level of the floor.

THE LEADER

THIS WAS HIS BEST LEADERSHIP SEASON TOO.

The 2009 Denver run proved Melo could lead a contender. The 2013 Knicks showed the finished version.

He was more vocal, more mature and fully embraced by New York. The team had a clear identity and Carmelo was the center of it.

Still in his 20s, with no real weakness in his offensive game and a 54-win team behind him, 2013 is the 4DK pick for the absolute peak of Carmelo Anthony.

2009 proved he could lead. 2013 showed he had fully grown into it.
REFERENCE NOTE: Stat references: Basketball-Reference — Anthony led the NBA at 28.7 PPG, played 67 games, finished third in MVP voting, and New York went 54–28.
