DETROIT SPENT THE WHOLE NIGHT CHASING.

Buffalo scored on its first three possessions to build a 21–0 lead early in the second quarter. Detroit finally answered with an 11-yard Jared Goff touchdown pass to Jahmyr Gibbs, but Buffalo came right back with another touchdown drive.

The Lions did not fold. They cut the lead to 10 multiple times, and Goff kept moving the ball. The problem was that every comeback push was met by another Buffalo response.

That is what made the game feel more controlled than the final 10-point margin suggests. Detroit was competitive after the opening avalanche. Buffalo was simply ahead of the game script all night.

JOSH ALLEN OWNED THE NIGHT.

Allen finished 20-of-31 for 248 yards and three passing touchdowns, then added 69 rushing yards and two more scores. That is five total touchdowns without a turnover.

He did not need a 400-yard passing night because Buffalo never asked him to play one-dimensional football. He beat Detroit with movement, red-zone power, quick decisions and just enough vertical aggression to keep the defense from sitting on anything.

THE RUN GAME MADE BUFFALO EVEN HARDER TO DEFEND.

James Cook carried 21 times for 135 yards and a touchdown. Buffalo finished with 203 rushing yards as a team. That meant Detroit could not simply widen the edges for Allen or live in pass-rush mode.

The Bills finished with 446 total yards and 34 first downs. That is the part that should concern everybody else in the AFC. When Buffalo gets this kind of production from the run game, Allen does not have to create every answer himself.

GOFF PLAYED WELL. THAT'S WHAT MAKES DETROIT'S DEFENSE THE STORY.

Jared Goff finished 26-of-38 for 327 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Amon-Ra St. Brown was excellent with nine catches for 142 yards and two scores. Jahmyr Gibbs added 52 rushing yards plus six catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Sam LaPorta caught six passes for 52 yards and another score.

Those are winning offensive numbers. Detroit still lost by 10 because the defense gave Buffalo too many clean answers and too many early points.

The Lions allowed 30 points to New Orleans in Week 1 and 41 tonight. That is 71 points allowed through two games. The offense looks capable of carrying stretches. It should not have to live in comeback mode every week.

AMON-RA KEPT DETROIT ALIVE.

St. Brown was the biggest reason the Lions continued to threaten. His nine catches and 142 yards consistently gave Goff somewhere to go when Detroit needed a response, and both of his touchdowns came while the Lions were trying to claw back into the game.

His first touchdown also moved him past Billy Sims for fifth in Lions franchise history in career touchdowns.

BUFFALO'S MESSAGE WAS BIGGER THAN ONE WIN.

This was the first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium. Buffalo did not just survive the moment — the Bills made the night look like a continuation of what they already were.

Allen controlled the game. Cook punished the front. Dalton Kincaid led Buffalo with seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. The Bills are 2–0, and through two weeks their offense looks comfortable playing multiple ways.

BUFFALO CONTROLLED THE NIGHT.

Detroit showed enough offense to keep the game alive, but the Lions were paying for the opening 21–0 hole from the second quarter on.

For Buffalo, this was a statement performance: five Allen touchdowns, 203 rushing yards and 41 points in the first regular-season game inside the new stadium.

For Detroit, the message is just as clear: the offense is not the problem. If this defense does not tighten up, Goff and those weapons are going to spend too many weeks trying to win shootouts.
