4DK NBA NIGHTCAP • PRESEASON • OCTOBER 8, 2026

GARZA GRINDS.
GIANNIS FITS.
BRON DEBUTS. DC STEALS MSG.

Six games gave us six different kinds of information: Boston's depth punched above its weight, Miami's new centerpiece looked comfortable again, Philadelphia finally put its new five on the floor, Washington's rebuild showed real bite, Atlanta erased a huge early hole and Luka Dončić looked ready to drive the Lakers' next era.

PRESEASON = INFORMATION, NOT OVERREACTION
THE NIGHTLY BOARD

WHO OWNED THE NIGHT?

PLAYER OF THE NIGHT

Luka Garza

22 PTS • 10 REB

Boston sat most of the names that will define its season and still controlled Cleveland. Garza set the tone with 22 and 10, battled on the glass and gave the Celtics exactly the kind of hard-hat preseason performance that can earn real rotation trust.

ROOKIE SPOTLIGHT

AJ Dybantsa

11 PTS • 4 STL • 0 TO

The scoring line was solid. The defensive activity was better. Dybantsa finished with four steals and no turnovers in 23 minutes at Madison Square Garden, another reminder that his ceiling is about much more than just getting buckets.

GAME OF THE NIGHT

Wizards 111, Knicks 109

WASHINGTON CLOSED IT IN THE FOURTH

The Knicks led at halftime, the game stayed tight, and Washington won the fourth 30–25. For a rebuilding team establishing a new identity around Trae Young, Anthony Davis and Dybantsa, those late-game reps at MSG were the real value.

THE FULL SLATE

SIX GAMES. SIX TAKEAWAYS.

The scores matter less than what the rotations, roles and young players told us.

BOSTON @ CLEVELAND

Boston's Depth Played Like It Had Something To Prove.

124–113

The Celtics opened preseason without Jayson Tatum, Paul George, Derrick White and a long list of their normal rotation, so this was supposed to be a development-night evaluation. Instead, the backups made the game competitive immediately and kept control. Luka Garza's 22 points and 10 rebounds were the headline, but Devin Carter's 17 and 16 apiece from Jordan Walsh and Baylor Scheierman mattered too.

What stood out most was the effort profile. Boston created extra possessions, attacked the offensive glass and kept the pace high enough that Cleveland's first-half veterans never created real separation. Preseason depth does not automatically translate into April depth, but this is exactly how players on the edge of a rotation force coaches to keep looking at them.

GARZA 22 PTS, 10 REB • DEVIN CARTER 17 • WALSH 16 • SCHEIERMAN 16
PHILADELPHIA @ BROOKLYN

Philly Finally Showed The Five. Brooklyn Still Won The Night.

114–108

This was the first real look at Philadelphia's new star mix with LeBron James joining Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. LeBron played only the first half but still showed the easiest way he can help this group immediately: 10 points, five assists and four rebounds while functioning more as organizer than primary scorer.

The more useful team takeaway came from Brooklyn. The Nets trailed 58–56 at halftime and flipped the game with a 37-point third quarter. Julius Randle gave them 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, and Brooklyn played faster and cleaner after halftime. Philly has overwhelming name value. Brooklyn made the better preseason argument for continuity and effort.

LEBRON 10 PTS, 5 AST, 4 REB • RANDLE 14 PTS, 6 REB, 2 STL • BKN 37–23 THIRD QUARTER
NEW ORLEANS @ MIAMI

Giannis Already Looks Comfortable In Miami's Pace.

128–118

The biggest question with Miami was never whether Giannis Antetokounmpo could produce. It was how quickly the offense would look natural around him. Giannis scored 18 on 8-of-13 shooting in only 18 first-half minutes, added four rebounds and four assists, and looked comfortable operating from deep post catches, transition chances and the short midrange.

Miami scored 73 in the first half and moved the ball well enough that the attack never felt like four players watching Giannis work. Andrew Wiggins had 13, Tim Hardaway Jr. 11 and Davion Mitchell handed out seven assists against one turnover. The Heat do not need October chemistry to look finished. They need the pieces to make sense. So far, they do.

GIANNIS 18 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST • 8/13 FG • WIGGINS 13 • HARDAWAY 11 • DAVION MITCHELL 7 AST
WASHINGTON @ NEW YORK

The Wizards' New Core Got A Real Closing-Time Rep.

111–109

Washington is not supposed to skip steps just because the roster suddenly has recognizable names. Anthony Davis gave the Wizards 16 points and seven rebounds in under 17 minutes, Trae Young added 15, and AJ Dybantsa's 11 points came with four steals and zero turnovers.

The Knicks led 63–57 at halftime and still had a chance late, but Washington won the fourth quarter and got the go-ahead floater from Will Riley. For New York, Jalen Brunson and Landry Shamet each scored 13. For Washington, the win mattered less than seeing the veterans and the rookie fit inside the same structure without Dybantsa needing the offense to stop for him.

ANTHONY DAVIS 16 PTS, 7 REB • TRAE 15 • DYBANTSA 11 PTS, 4 STL, 0 TO • BRUNSON 13
ATLANTA @ SAN ANTONIO

San Antonio Won The First Quarter. Atlanta Won The Evaluation.

123–116

The Spurs came out flying and won the first quarter 39–20. Dylan Harper looked comfortable with the starters, scoring 16 with four rebounds and four assists, while Victor Wembanyama gave San Antonio nine points, six boards and a block in limited work. De'Aaron Fox sat with soreness, which opened even more creation reps for Harper.

Then Atlanta flipped the game. The Hawks' young units stopped turning possessions into chaos, got 16 from Asa Newell and 15 points, five assists and three steals from Kingston Flemings, and punished San Antonio's 21 turnovers. This is the kind of preseason game both teams can like: the Spurs saw Harper handle real responsibility, while Atlanta's depth proved it could erase a 19-point first-quarter deficit.

HARPER 16 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST • WEMBY 9 PTS, 6 REB • NEWELL 16 • FLEMINGS 15 PTS, 5 AST, 3 STL
SACRAMENTO @ LOS ANGELES

Luka Set The Tone Before The Bench Had To Finish It.

114–110

Luka Dončić did not need a full workload to control the shape of the game. He scored 23 in 25 minutes, the Lakers ripped off a 19–3 second-quarter run, and the main rotation built enough cushion that the late-game story became whether the reserves could protect it.

Sandro Mamukelashvili's 19 off the bench gave Los Angeles another frontcourt scoring option, while Austin Reaves returned with eight points, eight assists and six rebounds. Sacramento made it interesting late, helped by second-chance opportunities and a sloppy 50 combined turnovers between the teams, but the Lakers got enough closing plays from the depth group to finish.

NEXT NIGHT • OCTOBER 9

A split two-game slate.

Friday is unusual: Houston and Dallas meet in the NBA China Game in Macao, then Memphis visits Chicago at United Center. The next Nightcap will cover both once the slate is complete.
